IPTV player with recording: how DVR works with IPTV
Recording IPTV works a bit differently from a satellite or cable box. Here's what actually happens, and what to check before you set a recording.
How IPTV recording works
An IPTV channel is a stream sent over the internet. To record it, the player opens the stream at the programme's start time and saves it as it comes in, then stops at the end time from the TV guide.
That means a recording is just like watching: it uses one of the connections on your provider's plan for as long as it runs.
The connections limit
Most IPTV plans allow a fixed number of connections at once, often one or two. If you're watching one channel and recording another, that's two connections. If your plan only has one, the recording can't start while you're watching something else.
Recording with RIPTV needs a free connection on your plan at the time the programme is on. If you often record while watching, ask your provider about a plan with more connections.
Record a programme in RIPTV
- Open Live TV and go to the TV guide.
- Find the programme you want, now or later in the week.
- Press and hold it (on a TV remote, hold the Select button) and choose Record. To keep every episode, choose Record series.
- When the programme has finished, play the recording back in RIPTV whenever you like.
Recording or catch-up?
If your provider records channels for you (catch-up), you may not need to record at all: scroll back in the guide and play the programme. Recording is useful for channels without catch-up, or when you want to keep a programme for longer than your provider does.
Good to know
- Recording is part of RIPTV Premium, along with pause and rewind for live TV and programme reminders.
- The quality of a recording is the quality of the stream your provider sends.
- If the TV guide times are wrong, a recording can start or end in the wrong place. A better guide (Premium lets you add an extra XMLTV link) fixes that.
A note on what RIPTV is
RIPTV is a player. It doesn't come with channels, films or series: you add the IPTV service you already subscribe to. Only use services you have the right to watch.
Questions
Can I record two channels at once?
Only if your plan has enough connections. Each recording uses one, and so does anything you're watching at the same time.
Is recording free?
Recording is a Premium feature: £4.99 a year or £12.99 once, on up to 5 devices. Every new install gets 7 days of Premium free, so you can try it first.
Does my provider need to support recording?
No special support is needed. RIPTV records the same stream you'd watch. You just need a free connection on your plan.
