How to pause and rewind live TV on IPTV

Being able to pause live TV is one of those things you miss the moment it's gone. Here's how it works with an IPTV service.

How pausing live IPTV works

A live channel keeps streaming whether you're watching or not. To let you pause, the player keeps hold of the stream as it arrives. When you press play again, it carries on from where you stopped, a little behind live.

Rewinding works the same way: you can go back through the part of the channel the player has kept while you've been watching.

Pause and rewind in RIPTV

  1. Start watching a live channel.
  2. Press Pause on your remote, or tap the screen and choose Pause on a phone.
  3. Press Play to carry on from where you paused, or rewind to see something again.
  4. Skip forward to catch back up to live.

What affects it

  • Your connection: if your internet slows while paused, the player may have less of the stream to play back.
  • The stream itself: some providers' streams behave differently, so pausing can be smoother on some channels than others.
  • Changing channel starts again from live on the new channel.
  • Pausing doesn't free up a connection. The channel keeps streaming while paused, so it still counts towards your plan's limit.

Going back further: catch-up

Rewind only covers what you've been watching. To watch a programme that started before you tuned in, or one from yesterday, you need catch-up, where your provider records channels. RIPTV supports catch-up from the TV guide where your provider offers it.

A note on what RIPTV is

RIPTV is a player. It doesn't come with channels, films or series: you add the IPTV service you already subscribe to. Only use services you have the right to watch.
